Highly rated: Google picks the top 12 Android apps in its Google Play store

Is this the “cream of the crop” in the Google Play store? Not everyone will agree, but that’s one of the things about lists that often stirs controversy.

Google just posted its top picks of 2012 across several categories, including music, books, movies, games and apps.

The search giant focused most of its top 12 list of Android apps on productivity and relatively “serious” apps like note-organizer Evernote, offline reader Pocket, and personal finance manager Mint. There’s also Expedia’s travel app and Ancestry.com’s genealogy app.

Other apps rounding the top 12 include online shopping app Fancy, the TED app for viewing talks and lectures from the famous “deep thinkers” event, Pixlr Express, a photo-editing app with “an amazing array of editing and photo creation tools”; and SeriesGuide Show Manager, designed to augmenting your TV viewing on a tablet.

Google’s top 12 Android apps for smartphones and tablets also includes the Zappos shopping app; Pinterest for sharing online content; and Grimm’s Snow White a “well-executed storybook that serves as a perfect introduction to the world of Grimm’s fairy tales.”
