One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) has confirmed that its XO Android tablet is to launch exclusively at Walmart retail stores next week.

In a recent blog post, the company said that the hybrid XO Tablet will launch at Walmart on July 16 before coming to other retailers in the U.S., Europe and in North and South America at a later date.

OLPC’s mission is to get affordable tablets in the hands of young children in developing countries, but that program has been somewhat stunted by delays in the past.

Prototype models turned up at CES 2011 and 2012 but, on announcing the latest model at this year’s show, there was at least the promise that an OLPC tablet would at last reach retailers later on in 2013.

The XO Tablet is believed to have a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution display, 8GB of memory, 1GB of RAM, dual-facing cameras and ports for micro USB and micro SD.
