The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative has confirmed that its XO Tablet is now available online at Walmart.com and says that the Android slate will be coming to Walmart stores on August 1.
The XO Tablet has a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution screen, a dual-core 1.64GHz processor, the Android Jelly Bean operating system and a reasonable battery life of eight hours. In addition, it boasts dual-facing cameras and a protective bumper case.
The tablet also comes equipped with more than 100 pre-loaded apps, games, books and other content.
OLPC says that the model supports up to three separate accounts, all of which can be tweaked by parents or educators to allow or deny access to apps, the Internet, games or the Google Play store.
These controls can be changed at any time while parents or teachers can also use the XO Journal tool to keep up-to-date on how children are using the tablet.
Available for $149.99 from Walmart.com, the XO Tablet is expected to come to other retailers, both in the U.S and across Europe and Canada later in the year. Support for French and Italian will also come shortly, with the current model supporting English and Spanish users.
