See ya Apple – Samsung could launch smartwatch & new Galaxy Note next month

by Doug Drinkwater

August 2 2013

Samsung is supposedly preparing to announce its first smartwatch and the latest Galaxy Note phablet at the IFA tech exhibition in Berlin, Germany next month.

Korean-language website AsiaEconomic reports that both devices will be unleashed into the public domain at the event on September 4, and details that the third-generation Galaxy Note will have a 5.7-inch display, 3GB of RAM and an Exynos 5 processor.

No specification details have emerged on the mysterious smartwatch, although fansite SamMobile believes that the device’s R&D division is to be established at the firm’s Germany headquarters in Berlin, fuelling speculation that it could first debut at the local IFA tech exhibition.

Earlier reports have claimed that the device could fall under a new Samsung product line-up called “Gear”. Samsung recently listed that the Gear brand would cover “watches, clocks, wristbands and bracelets.”

Samsung will be hoping to beat Apple and Google to launching the first smartwatch, with both computing giants reportedly working on their own designs.

"See ya Apple – Samsung could launch smartwatch & new Galaxy Note next month"

Samsung was introducing new mobile phones before Apple introduced its first iPhone in 2007, so Samsung being first doesn't really mean much. It was only a couple of years AFTER the first iPhone that Samsung came out with its iPhone-clone (reverse-engineering new technology takes time ;-)

As with smartphones, Samsung will need to wait until Apple introduces a smartwatch before they can start developing their copy of it.

The problem here is that Samsung designed this watch as a way to scoop Apple. They have no idea how Apple is planning to position its product, or even if Apple has plans to release a watch anywhere similar to a timepeace.
