Samsung & LG working on ‘kill switch’ to prevent smartphone and tablet theft

by TabTimes Staff

August 26 2013

Korean electronics giants Samsung and LG are reportedly looking to add a tool to their smartphones and tablets so that they are inoperable once stolen.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the function would act as a kill switch, essentially discouraging theft by enabling each manufacturer or carrier to lock down the smartphone or tablet even if the thief replaced the SIM card or hacked the firmware.

The tool would likely be added to new Samsung and LG devices by early 2014, although users would need to register their devices for the anti-theft tool to work.
