In an outlay worth almost $3 million, Google is giving 17,000 free Nexus 7 tablets to communities still affected by last year’s Hurricane Sandy.

Google has worked with non-for-profit service the New York State Community Action Association on the roll-out, and the group has since connected with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to deal with the storing and distribution of said tablets.

The Nexus 7 tablets will be used in numerous ways; closed libraries will loan them out as eReader replacements, while small businesses and libraries will use the Android devices for training. Community centers intend to utilize the device to help with communication as well as improve visitors’ technology skills.

[Ironically, Hurricane Sandy forced Google to cancel its media event for the Nexus 10 -- its first 10-inch tablet -- last year.]

Although the press release didn’t say as much, it is expected that the tablets in question will be Google’s second-generation Nexus 7, which launched back in July. This news comes as rumors are circling that the search giant is preparing a third-gen model.

The website of New York Governor, Andrew M. Cuomo, features a spreadsheet that details all of the locations where the tablets can be found.
