Gartner says over 1 billion Android smartphones & tablets will ship in 2014

by David Needle

January 7 2014

There are two sizes of iPad, and basically one size of iPhone (okay, the older 4S is slightly smaller than newer models). Android? Just about as many form factors as you can imagine.

And that variety is one of the reasons research firm Gartner expects over a billion Android smartphones and tablets to ship this year.

Specifically, Gartner expects Android to reach 1.1 billion users in 2014, up 26% from a yea ago, with the strongest demand coming from emerging markets

"There is no doubt that there is a volume-versus-value equation, with Android users purchasing lower-cost devices compared to Apple users," Gartner analyst Annette Zimmerman said in a statement on Tuesday.
