Amazon may be set to launch Kindle-based in-store payments service

Recently there have been reports of Apple launching a mobile payments network built on the iTunes infrastructure - is Amazon next?

The Wall Street Journal reports Amazon has a similar idea, using its Kindle line and relationship with millions of online shoppers to build a point-of-sale payments platform that could compete with the likes of both Verifone and Square.

In one scenario, the Seattle company would reportedly give merchants Kindle tablets and credit-card readers. Amazon also might offer retailers other services, such as website development and data analysis.
