RIM shows off BlackBerry PlayBook email, calendar, and contact apps

by George Jones

November 23 2011

Yesterday at the BlackBerry Innovation Forum, RIM surprised the crowd with a demo of native email, contacts, and calendar apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Community site BlackberryCool reports that the demonstration included a fairly extensive walkthrough of all three apps, including a few surprise twists.

The email client appears to be fairly straightforward, with expected features such as zooming in and out of email, mark priority, and more. The calendar app has an interesting feature, however. The font size of specific calendar dates scales small or large to indicate the number of appointments you have on any given day. The contacts section is powered by Gist, which already makes contact-based apps for iOS.

RIM has stated that native email, calendar, and contact apps will be released along with the PlayBook tablet's 2.0 OS update on February 17, 2012.

Blackberrycool's story (which includes numerous photographs of the three apps in action) also reports that based on information given by RIM at the same demo, the Blackberry Playbook keyboard accessory will ship in "early 2012".
