Apple CEO says Surface ‘a fairly compromised confusing product’

by David Needle

October 25 2012

Apple CEO Tim Cook talked up the iPad during the company’s earnings call today, but he also didn’t miss a chance to diss the competition.

In response to a question about Microsoft’s Surface announcement today, Cook said he hasn’t had a chance to play with it yet, “but from what we’re reading about it ... it’s a fairly compromised confusing product.”

Cook said one of the toughest things about developing new products is to “make hard trade offs about what a product should be. We’ve really done that with the IPad, the user experience is absolutely incredible.

“I suppose you could design a car that flies and floats, but I don’t think it would do those things very well,” he added. “When people look at what they want in a tablet they choose iPad, we expect that to continue.”

Another analyst asked if Apple planned to do anything more to make the iPad more appealing to enterprise customers given that Windows is well-established with those customers.

Cook noted that almost all of the Fortune 500 are already using or testing the iPad "and with our recent annoucements [of new iPads] that will only grow."

He also said Apple was moving aggressively into the Global Fortune 500. "We're doing fairly well there, but clearly there is much more to do," said Cook. "But I'm feeling really good about it."
