Apple's iPad sales take a hit

by David Needle

July 23 2013

Apple reported a drop in iPad sales during its conference call with analysts today reviewing its third quarter earnings results.

It was a rare bit of negative news for Apple’s high-flying iPad. Apple said it sold 14.6 million iPads in the third quarter compared to 17 million the same quarter a year.

CFO Peter Oppenheimer attributed the drop to the introduction of the first iPad with Retina Display a year ago helping to spike sales and channel issues. There was no mention of competiton from lower-priced competitors, in fact CEO TIm Cook specifically questioned whether any competitors were incresasing their tablet sales.

Oppenheimer started the call by noting Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones, a record for the June quarter, compared to 26 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Cook noted that Apple was able to reduce the channel inventory of both the iPhone and iPad "significantly" by over 700,000 units (in the case of iPad) since the beginning of the quarter.

Cook also touted the latest statistics from Chitika that said iPad accounted for 84% of Web traffic on tablets in U.S. and Canada in its most recent reporting for June 15 - 21.

He said "84% of Web traffic is incredible" and that "If others are selling more [tablets] I don't know what they're being use for because Web traffic is really important."
