What's coming next from Apple? We won't have long to find out. The company sent out media invitations to an event on October 22 that is widely expected to include a new iPad 5.

Speculation has been building for months now that Apple is readying a new iPad.

The October 22 event in San Francisco may also see the debut of a new iPad mini. The invite teased with "We still have a lot to cover."

The news comes at time of increased competition in the tablet market. Amazon has already announced and is set to ship its new Kindle Fire HDX tablets and Microsoft is readying new Surface 2 tablets and its hardware parnters are also readying new WIndows 8.1 tablets.

As is typical this time of year, vendors are scrambling to make sure they can get on store shelves in time for the holiday shopping season.
