A new patent application from Apple shows that the company may be working on a new power management system which will use solar energy to charge the company’s collection of iPads, iPhones and MacBooks.

Patently Apple discovered that the Cupertino firm filed the application with the US Patent & Trademark Office on Thursday, and the patent in question represents an innovative way of getting power from a solar panel.

As the patent describes, the technology would see Apple’s iOS and MacBook devices come fitted with a solar panel and the necessary power management circuitry so that the product would be able to hand the incoming power.

Apple is collectively in favour of renewable energy, with 75% of its corporate facilities already powered in this way. The company had committed to bringing this number to 100% in due course.
