New FileMaker 13 expands iPad design options; lets you run custom databases in the browser

by David Needle

December 3 2013

FileMaker released a major update of its namesake database today. The new version taps HTML5 technology to let you run custom, visually rich databases created with FileMaker in the browser.

For iPad and iPhone users FileMaker has added a raft of new features including slide controls, popovers and the ability to scan records using gestures. iPad and iPhone layouts can now be created in one step; and iOS solutions can include single-click capture of bar codes using the iPad (or iPhone) camera and custom keyboards that speed data entry.

The Apple subsidiary also made design improvements including support for shareable custom themes and styles, and the ability to drag and drop data fields onto design layouts.

On the security side, FileMaker now comes with AES 256-bit encryption that the company says “locks down data no matter where it lives – on iPad, iPhone, desktop or server.”

“The browser capability is a great new story,” FileMaker product manager Eric Jacobson told TabTimes. He said it goes a long way towards fulfilling a dream the company has had of providing rich interactivity to a client anywhere in the world.

“Browsers weren’t up to the task until now,” said Jacobson.

FileMaker WebDirect currently supports Safari, Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers. Jacobson said FileMaker plans to add support for mobile browsers.

“In FileMaker 13, we are seeing better server performance and superb handling of web viewer fields,” says Nicholas Graham, an IT administrator at J-List, an e-commerce retail shop, who’s been using the new version. “FileMaker 13 layout design is much easier and cleaner than in previous versions.”

The FileMaker Go app for iPad and iPhone continues to be free.

FileMaker 13 Pro license is $329 or $179 for FileMaker Pro 13 upgrades. Volume license pricing is also available.
