The biggest tech news of at least this past month was this morning -- Microsoft’s release of Office for iPad.

But even though the software giant repeatedly referred to “Office for iPad” in the media event earlier today to announce and demo the software, there actually is no such product in iTunes (Apple’s App Store).

The iPad version of Office consists of the three most popular Office apps, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But these aren’t available as a “suite” for downloading at the App Store, rather you have to download the apps individually Microsoft Word for iPad, Microsoft Excel for iPad and Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad

These free apps let you view files created with any of the apps. To get a “full” version that lets you create and edit Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, you need a subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365 service.

Office 365 Home Premium costs $9.99 per month for families, including a free month trial, or  $99.99 per year, prepaid)

There are also several business options for getting Office 365 subscriptions on a volume basis.
