Defense Dept. gives BlackBerry a fighting chance

by David Needle

May 2 2013

On the same day reports surfaced that Apple and Samsung are close to getting key U.S. Defense Department security approval, BlackBerry announced it has already received such approval.

Already a favorite of the Defense Dept. for its security features, the DoD has approved newer models, specifically the BlackBerry 10 smartphone and BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, for use on DoD networks.

Earlier today, the Wall Street Journal had reported the DoD plans to give similar approval to Apple’s iPhone and iPad as well as to Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones later this month.

If and when that happens, BlackBerry will face the most competition it’s had for the DoD’s mobile business.

While not everyone is issued smartphones or tablets, the DoD employs over 3 million people.
