Following on from the launch of the first public preview of the Windows 8 operating system in February, Microsoft says it plans to launch the ‘Release Preview’ in June, a version which Stephen Sinofsky expects to be the closest OS yet to the final version.

Microsoft announced the news at Japan’s Windows 8 Dev Days event, and subsequently broadcast the news through its Building Windows 8 Twitter feed. Sadly, the software giant chose not to expand on the news with what changes can be expected in this new ‘Release Preview’ version, which is expected to the final preview version of the OS before it debuts sometime around October.

News on Windows 8 has ramped up considerably lately, with Microsoft earlier this week revealing that the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 has been used by twice as many users as those who tried the Windows 7 Beta over the same period of time. Furthermore, just last week Microsoft announced three versions of the operating system – including a version for ARM-powered tablets – and revealed that it will look to offer device management to those IT department seeing employees bring in their own Windows 8 tablets.

Stephen Sinofsky took the covers off the Consumer Preview version of Windows 8 at the Mobile World Congress in February, where he revealed that the firm had made 100,000 changes to the OS since the initial developer version.

The operating system – Microsoft’s first to cater for desktops and tablets, as well as work on ARM chip architecture, is seen by many to be the biggest reinvention of Windows since Windows 95, and is expected to push the likes of Asus, Dell, Lenovo and even Nokia into releasing Windows 8 tablets before the year is out.
