Rumors over Barnes & Noble’s next Nook Tablet have taken a fresh twist with a new report claiming the tablet could run Windows 8.

Citing an insider at the company, tech site Digital Trends claims the second-generation Nook Tablet will most likely run Windows 8 and will debut at a press conference in September.

Barnes & Noble (B&N) discounted both the 8GB and 16GB Nook Tablets last month, a move which was put down to Amazon’s impending Kindle Fire 2 at the time. However, with B&N also said to be preparing a new tablet with a “revolutionary” display, it may be that the firm was simply getting ready to unveil a newer models.

The original Nook Tablet launched in November last year, and featured the Android 2.3 operating system. That said, the recent investment in Nook from Microsoft could open up the possibility that the next version will run Windows 8 or Windows RT.

Barnes & Noble declined to comment on the speculation.
