Windows 8 tablets with Intel processors face software delay

Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets are still missing power management software, according to a new report

Intel is reportedly still to implement power management software on its new Clover Trail system-on-chip, news which could delay the arrival of Intel-based Windows 8 tablets.

According to Business Week, which cited people familiar with the matter, Microsoft hasn’t yet approved any tablets with Intel’s new Clover Trail processor because Intel hasn’t produced the necessary power management software.

There was no mention as to whether this could delay Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets, although these models are already expected to debut a little later than ARM models (running Windows RT), by coming to market in Q1 of 2013.

Intel officially announced Clover Trail at an even in San Francisco last week, and there are high hopes (at least within Intel and Microsoft) that tablets bearing this model will be able to compete with Apple’s iPad.

However, there has been concern over Windows 8 in recent weeks with Intel CEO Paul Otellini reportedly telling employees at a function in Taiwan last week that Microsoft’s latest OS is not ready to release.

Windows 8 shipped to manufacturing partners in August and is due to go on general sale from October 26.
