A senior executive from Asus hints that the firm could release another Windows 8 tablet as well as Windows 8 phones in the near future.
Benson Lin, corporate VP of mobile communication products, told The Wall Street Journal that the company is “interested in making Windows Phones” and said that it is also considering making a Windows 8 Padfone, the smartphone concept which docks into a tablet.
“I think it makes sense for Windows 8,” said Lin. The Android-based Padfone is now on its second-generation having launched in October and comprises a 4.7-inch phone and a 10.1-inch tablet. The tablet derives its power and operating system when the smartphone is docked and turned on.
The operating system will focus on bringing Windows 8 to smaller screen sizes and on creating more interoperability between Windows 8 and Windows Phone. It is slated to ship halfway through 2013.
Asus has already announced a number of Windows 8 tablets this year, with these consisting of the VivoTab, the VivoTab RT and the VivoTab Smart.
