Mysterious tablet turns up at Nokia event in Pakistan
The Finnish company hosted a conference in Pakistan yesterday and on one point during proceedings what looked like a 7 or 8-inch tablet was shown on the stage screen, alongside a Nokia 620 phone and some kind of large desktop display.
Although this image could well be demonstrating the cross-platform capabilities of Windows 8, Nokia is rumored to have made a tablet.
It has been widely reported that Nokia will announce a 10.1-inch model running Windows RT and with its own battery-equipped keyboard cover at the Mobile World Congress although the company has -- publicly at least – remained quiet on the matter.
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently told reporters that his firm is looking “very closely” at tablets, and in particularly hinted that its participation in the market could depend on the success of Microsoft’s Surface.
“We are studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet, so we are trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time,” he said at the time.
But in a request for an interview at MWC, Nokia’s PR team appeared to hint that a tablet may not be on the agenda.
“On tablets, there’s been no change in our position. We are watching the consumer response to the overall tablet market, including the first wave of Windows 8 products from Microsoft and others, to gauge how best to prioritize this opportunity,” said a spokesman.
The same spokesman later added that Elop would give the same answer if prompted on Nokia tablets at the tech event in Barcelona.
