Best guess: Microsoft's Windows RT iPad Mini competitor to be priced at $349

by TabTimes Staff

June 12 2013

The next Surface tablet from Microsoft is expected to be the software giant's first 'smaller' tablet, an 8-inch model running Windows RT.

One analyst thinks Microsoft will be gunning for the iPad Mini with a $349 price that's just 6% higher than Apple's small tablet, but nowhere near the $199 of 7-inch Android tablet rivals.

Sameer Singh, who covers tablets and smartphones at his Tech-Thoughts website, pegged the price of an expected Windows RT-powered Surface RT "Mini" using a bill of materials (BOM) estimate largely based on industry-wide commodity component costs.

He used a similar "virtual" tear-down estimate last year to accurately predict the retail prices of Microsoft's Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets.
