Windows 8.1 looks set to launch to the general public in October, but could also herald a flurry of new 7-inch and 8-inch tablets from Microsoft’s hardware partners.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley first broke the news of Windows 8.1’s availability on Monday, but the folks at The Verge have since corroborated the story and insist that the update will see the introduction of new 7-inch and 8-inch Windows tablets from Microsoft’s hardware partners.

Windows 8 owners need not fear though for the operating system update will also be coming to their device around lanch time.

Reporters say that Microsoft is currently testing the “near-final” version of Windows 8.1 with a view to bringing the final copy to existing Windows 8 PCs and other devices in October.
