Is this a 'good' problem? Microsoft's Surface tablets in short supply

by David Needle

December 18 2013

Microsoft had to take a $900 million write off earlier this year related to unsold Surface RT tablets. Now it seems to have a very different problem.

Microsoft’s newer Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 computers are selling out both online and in stores.

There have been numerous reports of shortages including a Mashable story a few days ago quoting a Best Buy employee saying the Surface tablets are “extremely popular”.

Learning from its earlier mistakes, it's very likely Microsoft was careful not too overproduce its tablets this time and as a result underestimated demand. The next week will be very telling. If Microsoft can't replenish Surface supplies quickly enough, it will have missed a significant selling opportunity over the holidays.
