CompTIA's report suggests there is an increasing number of doctors using smartphones and tablets

A new report from CompTIA finds that almost half of practises will have surveyed the potential use of tablets by the end of next year.

The news comes from CompTIA’s third annual ‘Healthcare IT Insights and Opportunities’ study, which consisted of online surveys of 350 doctors, dentists and other healthcare providers, as well as 400 healthcare IT executives.

The report found that 25% of healthcare providers have already surveyed the potential use of tablets in their practise, while another 21% expect to do the same in the next year.

CompTIA found that 38% of physicians with smartphones use medical apps on a daily basis, with this figure expected to rise to 50% in the next 12 months, and also revealed that two-thirds of respondents consider implementing or improving mobile technologies to be a high or mid-level priority over the same timeframe.

Almost one-third of providers use their smartphones or tablets to access EMR/EHR systems, with another 20% expecting to start in the next year. A not-insignificant 10% of respondents intend to use videoconferencing with patients in the next year.

“As mobile devices and applications have become more user-friendly, affordable and powerful, the appeal to businesses of all types, including healthcare providers, has grown exponentially”, said Tim Herbert, VP of research at CompTIA.
