iPad sales soar on Black Friday, analysts say
Apple Insider reports that most of the company's retail stores couldn't keep the iPhone 4s on shelves, while iPad sales were up 68% on the day that traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season in the U.S.
According to Apple Insider, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore and his cohorts checked with more than 200 stores on Friday to gauge demand for Apple hardware, including the iPhone, iPad and Mac line-up. They checked about 100 Apple retail stores and more than 100 AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Best Buy, Walmart and Target shops.
Another analyst, Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray, also made a lot of calls on Friday. He found that iPad sales per hour were 68% higher than they were a year ago. He said the numbers support his projection of 13.5 million iPad units to be sold in Apple's December quarter, according to Apple Insider. For some perspective, Apple sold 11.1 million iPads in its most recent quarter.
Re-stocking was apparently in full swing over the weekend, because follow-up calls found that only 30% of Apple stores were still sold out of the iPhone 4S on Saturday, according to Apple Insider.
