Android and BlackBerry smartphone owners prefer the iPad

Blackberry owners show a greater desire for an iPad than for a BlackBerry PlayBook
A new report from US research group Maritz Research finds that Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone users would most like to own an iPad, as opposed to tablets from Amazon, Research in Motion (RIM) or Samsung.

The research firm questioned 2,500 North American smartphone owners for the survey and revealed that 41% of Android phone owners would like to own an iPad. This compared favourably with just 19% and 15% of respondents wanting a Samsung Galaxy Tab or Amazon Kindle Fire, respectively.

Blackberry owners showed an even greater desire for the iPad, with 53% of respondents showing an interest in buying Apple’s tablet. This figure fell to just 8.5% for the BlackBerry PlayBook but rose to 12% for the Kindle Fire and 11% for the Galaxy Tab.

The figures were similar for Windows Phone owners, of which 40% expressed an interest in buying the iPad. Just 16% opted for the Kindle Fire, and 12% for the Galaxy Tab.

Of those who purchased a tablet in the last three months, 50% have an iPad, 13% have a Kindle Fire and 9% have a Galaxy Tab. These tablets were the only ones mentioned as competition for the iPad, so there was no choice for respondents to choice tablets from the likes of Acer, Asus, Motorola, Sony or Toshiba.

The survey also looked at tablet pricing, with the research concluding that the iPad tops the list of desired tablet around the $500 price. The Kindle Fire was the prime choice of those willing to pay less than $250.

Low-cost, entry-level tablets, like the Coby Kyros, were included in the study but did not attract enough attention to be listed in the study's findings.
