Healthcare report: Tablet adoption has doubled among physicians in the last year

by Doug Drinkwater

May 10 2012

A new study from Manhattan Research reveals that 62% of physicians are now using tablets for professional purposes, with over a half of all doctors now using their device at the point-of-care.

The research group claims that the 62% penetration is more than double than that of last year, and unsurprisingly notes Apple’s iPad as the preferred slate of choice among the working, tech-using doctors.

The study, which took in the views of 3,015 practising physicians covering 25 specialities in the US in the first quarter of the year, also found that physicians with three screens (tablets, smartphones and desktops/laptops) spend more of their workday on the internet, and revealed that over two-thirds of these folk are now using video to keep up-to-date with the latest clinical information.

"Physicians are evolving in ways we expected -- only faster," said Monique Levy, vice president of research at Manhattan Research. "The skyrocketing adoption rates of tablets alone, especially iPads, means healthcare stakeholders should revisit many of their assumptions about reaching and engaging with this audience."

For those interested in finding out more, Manhattan Research will be holding a webinar on the subject on Thursday, May 17 at 3pm EST.
