A new study from market research firm Gartner finds that most mobile users prefer to download free or sub-$3 apps, and finds that developers are increasingly turning to in-app purchasing.

The research group says that there will be 45.6 billion app store downloads in 2012, with free apps accounting for 89% of these (40.1 billion).

Paid-for downloads will total 5 billion.

"In terms of the apps that consumers are buying, 90% of the paid-for downloads cost less than $3 each," said Gartner research director Sandy Shen.

Similar to free apps, lower-priced apps will drive the majority of downloads. Apps between 99 cents and $2.99 will account for 87.5% of paid-for downloads in 2012, and 96% by 2016.

As to be expected, Gartner finds that Apple's App Store continues to dominate, with app downloads to increase 74% year-on-year to reach 21 billion in 2012. And while the firm expects most app downloads to be dominated by the respective app stores from Apple, Google and Microsoft, it does also foresee Amazon and Facebook have an increasing influence.

"Amazon has appealed to users with its strong brand, global presence and a good selection of high-quality content while Facebook's recently launched App Center, supporting both mobile devices and desktops, will become a powerful competitor due to its strong brand and leading position in social networking and gaming," said Ms. Shen.

"In China, there is a boom market of independent Android stores, due to the lack of presence of Google Play and 'weak' stores from CSPs. We expect to see more new entrants to the market, aiming to deepen relationships with their customers and/or to capture some of this growth market."
Gartner's study also tackles what developers are doing with their apps and reveals that mobile developers are increasingly taking to in-app purchasing as a subtle way to monetize their content.
The research group says that the number of app downloads featuring in-app purchasing will increase from 5% of all downloads in 2011 to 30% by 2016, and expects in-app purchasing to drive 41% of app store revenues by 2016, up from 10% in 2011.

    The reason is simple. I have dozens of apps that I bought, use and then delete because theynare hopeless. It is impossible to know how good any are based on the sales propaganda and the "mates reviews". Have you tried to look for an app at the istore. After you search and find 350 matches aand most are very slightly different versions of the same thing. How do you pick the best one? I usually rely on app reviewers or recommendations. Honestly, half the apps are a waste of space. Statistics are always suspect - i suggest 80% of the downloads are less than 5% of the actual app. Library. If they pull the angry bird series and the like from the stats, what do they look like?

    For app developers freemium (either ad based or in app purchase based) is the right model.
