NPD DisplaySearch has forecast Black Friday to help tablet shipments hit 21.5 million units in Q4, with notebooks and netbooks expected to reach 14.6 million over the same period.

The research group expects this to be the start of a trend which sees 80 million tablets shipped in 2013, compared to 63.8 million notebooks, figures which would mark the first time more tablets than notebooks have been shipped in North America on an annual basis.

The firm used its DisplaySearch blog to detail that this trend was down to the already high penetration rate of PCs in U.S. homes, increasing consumer preference for tablets and the emergence of big brands like Amazon and Google in the tablet market.

NPD DisplaySearch believes that Black Friday will be the 'catalyst' of this, something it puts down to the increasing variety of screen sizes and the desire of tablet manufacturers to match or drop below $199 it costs for a Nexus 7.
