KinderTown data shows that iPad 4 and iPad mini usage exploded over the festive season

A new report from the developers of KinderTown suggests that Apple’s iPad mini was the tablet of choice for young children over the Christmas period.

Pulling in data from the app's more than 200,000 users, KinderTown found that iPad mini usage increased by 270% over the Christmas period, compared to a 190% rise for the fourth-generation iPad.

As a result, the tablets now account for 5.8% of 4.9% of KinderTown users respectively, although the iPad 2 is still dominant with a 32% share.

KinderTown is an app store that aims to help parents and teachers find the best educational apps for 3-8 year old children.

“Since KinderTown users are almost exclusively made up of parents and teachers focused on the education of young children, we can begin to draw the conclusion that the iPad mini is preferred over the iPad for early childhood play and learning,” said the developer.

These figures would seem to give credence to the view that the 7.85-inch iPad mini is favored by schools and young students. Indeed, at the end of last year, the Michigan-based East Jordan Public School district shunned the larger iPad to invest almost $300,000 on 770 iPad minis.
