Here’s the proof that education is pretty crazy about tablets

Tablet shipments into schools doubled in 2012, according to a new report

Tablet shipments just keep growing in schools, colleges and universities, according to the latest market research.

In a new report, IDC claims that tablet shipments into education grew 103% year-on-year in 2012 and says that this demand has pushed the form factor to now account for 35% of all “education client devices” (we take this to be mean computing devices).

When trying to explain this rise, IDC concluded that the shipments were driven not only by forward-thinking K-12 schools, but also by the hardware makers, content owners and solution providers trying to cater for the classroom.

“We expect K-12 in particular to be at the center of new innovations where partnerships between hardware makers, content owners, solution providers and others will lead to many new educational opportunities,” said IDC analyst Tom Mainelli.

The research firm expects this trend to continue as the U.S. government increasingly looks to digitize education and especially as tablet prices continue to tumble.

"While tablet sales to the education sector doubled from 2011 to 2012, we are only seeing the beginning of a much greater push that is likely to last for years,” said David Daoud, the research director for personal computers at IDC.

“As a result, we remain highly optimistic about sustained tablet growth in education, particularly as prices decline due to greater competition.”
