Juniper Research's latest report reveals that the number of downloaded smartphone and tablet apps will spike from 80 billion in 2013 to 160 billion by 2017, but had some bad for developers looking to monetize.
The report, which is entitled Future App Stores: Discovery, Monetisation & Ecosystem Analysis 2013-2018, states that games will account for 40% of all downloads by 2017 and expects this trend to see app stores improve “stickiness” by developing social functions for gameplay.
If that is good news for gaming app developers however, non-gaming folk will be alarmed to read that Juniper Research expects most downloads to be for free apps in four years’ time.
Indeed, the researcher claims that just 5% of consumers will pay for smartphone and tablet apps, which is even less than the 6.1% of consumers who profess to do so in 2013.
(App discovery and monetization will be among the key topics at the Tablet Ecosystem conference coming to San Francisco on September 12).
