WalMart to start selling new iPads at midnight

by Tom Dunlap

March 15 2012

Attention Walmart shoppers: You may not have to wait until 8 a.m. tomorrow to get your mitts on the new Apple iPad.

The mega store chain has confirmed in an email that it will start selling the 16GB WiFi-only model tonight at 12:01 local time at all of its 24-hour stores.

The sale includes both the black and white versions, as well as the now $399 iPad 2, if  the hefty price iPad tag scares you and you don't need the 3.1 million pixels that the  Retina display serves up. .

Walmart says it has only a "limited supply" of the tablets.

If you can't make it to a Walmart, the new iPad will be available in the U.S. and nine other countries beginning at 8 a.m. local time.

The new iPad comes with a faster processor and a much sharper screen. It also boasts an improved camera.

For many customers, visiting a store in person — instead of having one shipped — offers consumers a chance to mingle with die-hard Apple fans.

Apple quickly ran out of supplies it set aside for advance orders, and at last check, was telling customers Thursday to expect a two- to three-week wait for orders placed through its online store.
