Study: Forget corporate deployments, BYOD will drive business adoption of Windows 8 tablets

The latest research findings from Forrester Research show that workers like the look of Windows 8 tablets, but suggest that businesses will move slower to Microsoft’s new operating system than they did with Windows 7.

Illustrating the latest trends via an official blog post, analyst David Johnson explained that IT decision-makers are nowhere near as interested in Windows 8 as they were with Windows 7, with just 24% of firms looking to migrate to Windows 8 but have no current plans to do so. This compared to 49% of firms for Windows 7 back in 2009.

Johnson pointed out that only 5% of firms have specific plans in place to migrate to Windows 8 over the next year, compared to 10% for Windows 7 three years ago, and added that 10% of companies plan to miss Windows 8 altogether to wait for Windows 9.

However, Forrester found that employees had something of a different take on Windows 8, with interest certainly piquing in the new Windows 8 tablets that are now hitting the market.

Of the nearly 10,000 information workers surveyed, 20% said that they would prefer a Windows 8 tablet versus 26% for iOS and 17% for Android. RIM’s PlayBook attracted just 1% of employees.

Given IT’s stance in this survey, Johnson added that the figures bode “well for Windows 8’s prospects for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) demand”.
