Toshiba has developed a 6.1" tablet LCD display that offers a resolution of 2560 x 1600, which works out as 498 pixels per inch.
The Mobile Display LCD panel has a contrast ratio of 1,000:1 and viewing angles of 176 degrees, both in horizontal and vertical orientation.
The panel offers 16.7 million colours, covering 61% of the NTSC colour gamut, and could soon support glasses-free 3D content, according to Toshiba officials, who revealed the possibility in a company press release.
Toshiba is due to showcase the display for the first time at the FPD International exhibition in Yokohama, Japan next week. The firm has not yet revealed when the panel will come to production.
Should the display come to market, it will offer a far greater pixel density than Apple's Retina display, which boasts 326 pixels per inch. The Retina display features on the iPhone 4, 4S and iPod Touch.
