The three media heavyweights kept their Windows app under wraps until a few hours before Microsoft’s Windows 8 launch event.

Actually, it's probably Microsoft who held them off, finally giving the green light for the three media giant’s apps to be released in the News section of the Windows Store.

On the same day, the top newspapers in several countries - including The Globe and Mail in Canada, Suddeutsche Zeitung in Germany, Haaretz in Israel, De Standaard in Belgium and Aftenposten in Norway - as well as the main arabian version of Al Jazeera, entered the Windows tablet ecosystem.

The releases follow those by two Conde Nast magazines, Wired and The New Yorker, which also became available as Windows apps very recently.

While somewhat different in their look - as different as Microsoft’s stringent UX guidelines allow (which means, not much), The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal Windows 8 apps have a very similar structure. Both offer some articles for free, but are designed with paying subscribers in mind. Apparently, Windows 8 app will be bundled with other tablet app subscriptions.

The ABC News app is a free app, with some video content.

We'll see at Thursday’s launch event if Microsoft has other strong brands to show as early adopters of its new Windows 8 OS. (Check back to TabTimes later today for full coverage.)
