Consumers want clothes and tablets for Christmas

Tablets are the most desired gadget presents for Christmas, and trail only clothes as the most wanted gifts, according to the Consumer Electronics Association’s 18th Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns Study.

The study, which also suggested a strong demand for notebooks, peace, happiness and money, marked a significant change from last year, when peace and happiness were the most desired quality for the holiday season, followed by laptops and tablets.

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) said that consumers plan to spend $769 on average on gifts this year, and claimed that about a third of this (a record $243) will go towards electronics. This figure represents a rise of 5% from last year's figure.

A separate report from the National Retail Federation revealed that shoppers plan to spend $704.18 on average in the holiday season, down from the $718.98 average of last year.

According to the NRF, 58% of shoppers would like to receive a gift card this holiday season, while half would like to receive clothes. Just over a third said that they would like consumer electronics or computer-related accessories.
