Chipmaker Qualcomm has scooped up 1,400 granted and pending US patents and another 1,000 foreign patents from HP.

The purchase includes "fundamental mobile operating system techniques" and come from a collection of patent portfolios formerly belonging to the once high-flying smartphone maker Palm.

After buying Palm for ever a billion dollars, HP ended up shuttering the business including the ill-fated Touchpad tablet based on Palms's highly-rated webOS.
