Analytics firm Distimo has revealed its findings for the full year 2013, and the vast majority of the 20 top-grossing apps on both platforms were games.
Bear in mind this applies to both smartphones and tablets globally, but it's certainly still relevant to us.
In Apple's App Store, the ten top-grossing games in 2013 were:
- Clash of Clans
- Candy Crush Saga
- Hay Day
- Puzzle & Dragons
- The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth
- Minecraft - Pocket Edition
- Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North
- The Simpsons: Tapped Out
- Modern War
- Big Fish Casino
Interstingly, the Google Play store's ten top grossers included over half Asian-language games, and three of the top ten were LINE-related messaging apps.
Still, it's clear that games are the top earners when it comes to tablet and smartphone apps.
Distimo also published figures on December alone. Notably Angry Birds Go! was the second most popular free app in the App Store even among non-games, while Candy Crush took fourth among free apps in Google Play. Amazon's Appstore had three games in the top five free apps for December, including Candy Crush in the top spot.
Games dominated the top-grossing and top paid apps for the month on all three platforms as well.
