'Candy Crush' dev is brandishing a 'candy' trademark in its battle against competitors

Candy Crush developer King must have some big gumballs to be pulling this stunt.

The UK casual game developer has trademarked the word "candy" in Europe, and is now asking developers of other games with "candy" in the name to take their games down.

In particular King is targeting a known for some reason as All Candy Casino Slots – Jewel Craze Connect: Big Blast Mania Land, claiming that its app icon—which says simply "Candy Slots"—is a blatant infringement on its trademark.

However, the developer sent a statement to to clarify that this is not a blanket legal attack on any and all candy-related games.

"We have trademarked the word 'CANDY' in the EU, as our IP is constantly being infringed and we have to enforce our rights and to protect our players from confusion," the developer said. "We don't enforce against all uses of CAND—some are legitimate and of course, we would not ask App developers who use the term legitimately to stop doing so."

The statement continues, "The particular App in this instance was called 'Candy Casino Slots - Jewels Craze Connect: Big Blast Mania Land', but its icon in the App store just says 'Candy Slots', focussing heavily on our trademark. As well as infringing our and other developer's IP, use of keywords like this as an App name is also a clear breach of Apple's terms of use. We believe this App name was a a calculated attempt to use other companies' IP to enhance its own games, through means such as search rankings."

Of course, they can qualify it however they want, but that doesn't change the fact that Candy Crush is little more than a candy-themed version of Bejeweled, a PopCap game that debuted in the '90s. Maybe King shouldn't be the one waving its big legal lollipop around.
