Delta Airlines unwrapped a new Fly Delta for iPad app today that has some unique features for tablet-toting fliers.

For one, the app includes a Glass Bottom Jet feature that, while it doesn’t actually offer a direct visual view underneath (like a glass bottom boat), does give you a map view of where you’re flying overhead. You can also call up content related to your location and connect with others via social networks.

There’s also a fast-forward/rewind slider so you can jump to any place you missed or peek ahead. Delta says the app will work on any of its 800 Wi-Fi equipped aircraft.

The app also includes travel planning tools to book a trip, destination guides, flight check-in, an interactive trip map and a "What's Next" feature to help guide customers to the next point in their journey.

The app is part of a $140 million investment the airline said it’s made in technology which included the 2012 launches of the new in November and revamped self-service kiosks in September.

With a growing number of passengers taking tablets with them on flights, particularly iPads, Delta said development of the iPad made sense.

"Our goal is to simplify the digital experience across the touch points where our customers already spend their time by making their interactions with Delta easy and intuitive," said Glen Hauenstein, Delta's executive VP of Network Planning, Revenue Management and Marketing.
