Use your own tablet to watch in-flight movies? Lufthansa Airlines says yes

Rather than sticking with on-board entertainment systems with setback trays, Lufthansa Airliness plans to offer a system that lets airline passengers use their own carry-on devices for in-flight entertainment.

Lufthansa Systems, a subsidiary of the airline, has developed BoardConnect, a small on-board server that delivers content like in-flight movies, music, electronic publications, and more to each passenger using the tablets, laptops and smartphones they already carry with them aboard.

"Instead of modifying seats and building screens into seats, we simply use the passengers' own personal electronic devices" to provide the content, Nobert Mueller, a senior VP with Lufthansa Systems, told CITEworld.

"It was more about creating a new market than about solving a problem," he added.
