The report comes from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, which puts the delay down to a shortage of Retina Display panels. Apple had apparently been planning to launch the tablet in the fourth quarter, just in time for the holiday season.

Instead, sources believe that Apple will release a new iPad mini minus the Retina Display later this year, possibly as the affordable model as predicted by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Previous reports have indicated that Apple could release its fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad in September before launching the new iPad mini in the fourth quarter.

Digitimes reported this week that Apple has been contemplating whether to equip this particular model with a Retina Display and said one month earlier that the firm may have delayed the tablet so to help normal iPad sales.
