Nintendo clarifies: ‘there are no plans to offer mini-games on smartphone devices’

I reported yesterday that Nintendo may be about to announce details of its plans for smartphones and tablets, and now the company has issued a statement detailing what exactly not to expect. Tellingly, Nintendo hasn't ruled out that it is developing some sort of strategy for mobile devices; the statement just says specifically that it's not creating "mini-games" for smartphones and/or tablets:

"Nikkei's article contains information previously stated by Mr. Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo's willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products. However during such past announcements Mr. Iwata has also stated that Nintendo's intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer mini-games on smartphone devices. "

I'm predicting a sort of "Nintendo Channel" app where users can watch videos and read about Nintendo apps. The question is, why would anyone download an app with no inherent interaction or value besides as a vehicle for advertisements about other products?

Hopefully Nintendo has something more interesting up its sleeves—but since Nintendo may announce something as soon as Thursday, I'll stop speculating there. [via Engadget]
