Julia White, GM of the Microsoft Office division, mentioned that figure in her keynote at the TechEd conference in Houston.
Microsoft had previously announced that Office apps had registered 12 million downloads in their first week. They then added 15 million downloads in the following five weeks.
These figures are encouraging for Microsoft. However, the Office suite on the iPad comes in three distinct apps. Assuming all prospective users downloaded all three apps, this would result in 9 million potential users.
While Microsoft apps are no longer in the top spot, Word is still currently ranked as the fourth most downloaded app in the US App store. Google Docs, a direct competitor introduced last weeks, ranks as 7th.
