The research firm expects the North American market to account for just over 50% of these shipments, and attributes the rosy outlook to expected growth for Apple's iPad mini and Windows 8.
“The rate of innovation is slowing as tablet vendors augment their product portfolios to meet the needs of market audiences,” said senior practice director Jeff Orr, in a statement.
“The late 2012 launches of Apple’s iPad mini and a variety of slates based on Intel architecture and new Windows operating systems will only begin to show their progress this year.”
With Orr saying that 2012 shipment figures are "still rolling in", the company is unable to give a definitive answer of how many tablets shipped in 2012. However, Orr expects the figure to reach around 110 million units, a figure which would mean that ABI Research expects tablet shipments to increase by a quarter in the coming year.
In addition to good news for Apple and Microsoft, ABI Research also detailed just how big the enterprise tablet market is becoming, with analysts at the firm expecting 19% of all shipments to end up in the workplace this year.
This report isn't the first to notice the rise of tablets in business.
Earlier this week, UBS analyst Brent Thill claimed that iPads could replace laptops in enterprise, while Forrester Research has forecast businesses to splash out $24 billion on iPads in the coming year.
Piper Jaffray is slating enterprise tablet deployments to increase four-fold in 2013.
