A new report by NDP DisplaySearch notes that Windows 8's touch screen interface, and a range of new mobile form factors, has given rise to a "modest" increase in notebooks featuring touchscreen displays.

NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim says touchscreen-enabled notebook PC shipments will reach 19.8 million units (11% of the market), in 2013, estimated to grow to 64.2 million units (40%), by 2017.

"Premium pricing and a lack of compelling uses for touchscreens on notebooks continue to hinder adoption," said Richard Shim.

But change is coming. Shim notes that as touch interfaces become increasingly common across all mobile devices touchscreen notebooks will become far more common.
