Report: Four big tablet vendors challenge notebooks — for now

Research and Markets “Global Tablet Computers market 2011-2015” report says that four vendors currently dominate the tablet market: Amazon, Apple, Motorola Mobility, and Samsung Electronics.

That said, Apple dominates the other three vendors with over 60% of the tablet market, according to several research firm’s estimates. Amazon’s Kindle Fire is a distant second with about a 16% share. And Apple’s on the rise selling 3 million iPads just a few days after the new model was released last Friday. 

The research firm cites estimates by TechNavio analysts that the tablet market is set to grow 20.6% from 2011-2015). “One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the benefits of tablet computers over laptops,” according to Research and Markets which also notes “growing demand for tablet computers in enterprises.”

The report says tablets have advantages over notebooks in the enterprise because they are more reliable (fewer moving parts) and offer more benefits as a mobile computing device (including 3G and newer 4G connectivity options) than notebook PCs. 

The next generation of notebooks, called Ultrabooks, are expected to incorporate tablet features such as a touchscreen interface and light weight, though tablets will still weigh less.
