For all the talk that excessive use of the Internet and mobile apps are destroying our brains, a peek inside the App Store indicates the opposite may be true.
There are many excellent apps that can keep your mind fresh and sharp by participating in the large selection of mental gymnastics available.
Lumosity promises to build your overall memory, attention and brain performance through a series of mental workout games. When creating a free account you are presented with various areas of brain performance that you wish to improve. This will then create a more personalized selection of daily mental workout games.
A free account gives you limited access to a brain profile and game categories. True intellectual workout buffs can spend $79.99 per year for greater account access, which also includes the company’s web site and iPad app.
Much like Lumosity, Brainscape has several games and activities designed to strengthen your brain. Get started with trying out standardized tests, quizzes about the brain structure or language learning. Creating an account will sync all your saved activity and library across devices and the web.
Brainscape has several in-app purchases available for those who want to learn about specialized topics, such as becoming a tech startup genius or better understanding music theory concepts.

Fit Brains seeks to distinguish itself through its backing by clinical neuropsychologist Paul Nussbaum. It has a large database of activities that contribute toward a Fit Brain Index.
The games are designed to increase one’s concentration, problem solving, memory, visual skills and speed. If you like the adult version and want to share it with a child, then check out Fit Brains for Kids: Sparky’s Adventures.
After all that rigorous brain training, take the mental exercise in a different direction with the excellent game Dots: A Game About Connecting. You must connect as many like-colored dots inside a grid within a one-minute timeframe. Creating squares clears the board of that specific color, which is the pathway to large point gains and bragging rights.
After enough gameplay you can earn upgrades that make the game easier by extending the time or eliminating one of the categories of colored dots. The game is free, with some paid upgrades available if you want to buy a better outcome.
